The Football Association (FA) is reportedly considering Frank Lampard as a surprise candidate for the England manager’s position. The former Chelsea and Everton manager is one of the names on the FA’s shortlist to take the role on a full-time basis, even though his managerial career has been marked by mixed results.

Currently, Lee Carsley is in interim charge of the England national team following a successful start to his tenure. Under Carsley, the Three Lions achieved two consecutive 2-0 victories—first against the Republic of Ireland in Dublin and then against Finland at Wembley. While the matches weren't the most challenging, Carsley’s young and dynamic squad delivered confident performances that have made him the favorite to secure the job permanently.

However, despite Carsley's favorable odds, the FA has yet to make a final decision. Other high-profile managers such as Eddie Howe, Graham Potter, and Manchester City’s Pep Guardiola are also being considered. The possibility of Guardiola taking the role has garnered significant attention, especially with his current contract at City set to expire at the end of the season.

Frank Lampard’s inclusion on the FA shortlist is perhaps the most surprising. While Lampard had an impressive stint at Derby County, his subsequent spells at Chelsea and Everton were far less successful. His return to Chelsea as interim manager in 2023 was widely regarded as disappointing, yet the FA sees potential in the former England midfielder to take on the prestigious role. Despite his limited experience in international management, Lampard’s status as an England legend and his knowledge of the game keep him in the conversation.

At present, the bookmakers list Carsley as the top candidate, followed by Guardiola. If the FA can tempt Guardiola into the role after his Manchester City contract ends, it could mark a new chapter for the national team.

As the FA deliberates its options, the choice of England’s next manager remains uncertain. Stay tuned for updates as the situation develops, with a decision likely to be made after Carsley's interim period concludes.
