Phuket Provincial Police has launched a new initiative aimed at building a network of female road safety volunteers to combat risky driving behaviour and reduce road accidents in the community.

The project aims to support government officials in ensuring road safety and preventing risky behaviour on the roads.

The project was launched yesterday (5 September) at an event at Phuket’s Pago Design Hotel, north of Phuket Town.

The event was chaired by Police Major General Sinlert Sukhum, Phuket Provincial Police. Officials from various government agencies, representatives from the public and private sectors and road safety partners were also in attendance. The event also featured a workshop titled “Let’s create a network of female road safety volunteers in the Phuket province community!”.

“The project aims to make female volunteers the focal points of road safety promotion. The volunteers will work closely with authorities to monitor risky behaviours such as not wearing helmets and illegal driving, and assist with traffic control,” explained Maj. Gen. Pol Sinlert.

“They will also act as spokespeople for the community, raising awareness, educating local residents and warning at-risk groups,” he added.

Gen. Sinlert expressed his gratitude to the 94 female volunteers who completed the training workshop.

According to an official report on the event, he said he highlighted the important role the police play in supporting police efforts to reduce road accidents and curb the spread of drugs through increased vigilance in the community. The initiative is part of a wider effort to improve road safety in Phuket, with the ultimate goal of reducing the number of fatalities and injuries from road accidents, the report added.
