Liverpool's summer transfer plans have encountered a significant obstacle, with top target Martin Zubimendi opting to stay at Real Sociedad. The La Liga midfielder was high on Liverpool's list, but the Reds have been left frustrated after Zubimendi's unexpected U-turn, just days before the Premier League season begins.

Despite early assurances that Zubimendi would leave Sociedad, the 25-year-old has chosen to remain with his current club. Sociedad played a crucial role in convincing the midfielder to stay, insisting that Liverpool would need to pay his £51 million release clause in full, a demand that proved too steep.

This setback is particularly unwelcome for new Liverpool boss Arne Slot, who has yet to make a single signing since taking charge at Anfield. With the season opener just five days away, Slot's preparations have been hampered by the lack of new recruits, raising concerns among the Anfield faithful.

Adding to the transfer woes, Fabio Carvalho has completed his expected move to Brentford. The young forward, who impressed during Liverpool's pre-season tour in the United States, has signed a five-year deal with the Bees in a transfer worth £27.5 million.

Liverpool legend Robbie Fowler has voiced his concerns over the club's inactivity in the transfer market, stressing the need for reinforcements. In a recent column for Mirror Football, Fowler highlighted the urgent need for a holding midfielder, a centre-back, and a left-back before the transfer window closes.

"Liverpool supporters are a little concerned with the lack of activity in the transfer market," Fowler wrote. "I understand where they are coming from. Ideally, new signings should be given time to settle in before the season kicks off, but Liverpool needs to act quickly."

As the clock ticks down, Liverpool's transfer strategy will be under intense scrutiny. With Zubimendi out of the picture, the pressure is mounting on Slot and sporting director Richard Hughes to identify and secure alternative targets that can strengthen the squad in key areas.

Meanwhile, Brentford boss Thomas Frank has expressed his delight at acquiring Carvalho, praising the player's versatility and work ethic. "Fábio is a player with a lot of qualities. He can play in multiple positions, and his mentality to work hard under pressure is very impressive. We're excited to have him push our team forward," Frank stated.

Liverpool now faces the challenge of addressing their squad gaps in a rapidly closing transfer window, as they aim to compete at the highest level in the upcoming Premier League season.
