Former Manchester United defender Raphael Varane has praised Como FC's ambitious "project" after officially joining the newly-promoted Serie A club. The World Cup-winning center-back left Old Trafford earlier this summer as his contract expired, and United chose not to extend it. After a period of contemplation, Varane signed a two-year contract with Como, with an option for a third year.

Varane, 31, experienced several managerial changes during his tenure at Manchester United, joining in 2021 and witnessing significant upheaval at the club. He now looks forward to stability and growth in his new Italian surroundings.

"I was curious about Como's project from the start," Varane said upon his arrival. "It was unique, unlike any other offer. As I learned more, it became even more intriguing, aligning with my goals."

The French international expressed his excitement about contributing to Como's development, stating, "There's a lot to do here, and it's very exciting. With my experience at the highest level, I aim to help build this club and drive it to success."

Varane reunites with Cesc Fabregas, Como's manager and part-owner. Fabregas, a former Arsenal, Barcelona, and Chelsea midfielder, praised Varane's signing as a testament to the club's ambition. "Raphael is a special player. His signing showcases our commitment to excellence," Fabregas remarked.

Fabregas took charge of Como after serving as an assistant last season, leading the team to a nine-match unbeaten streak and securing automatic promotion to Serie A. The club has made significant moves in the transfer market, adding former Premier League stars Alberto Moreno and Pepe Reina, alongside Varane, to bolster the squad for their first Serie A season in over 20 years.

"I'm thrilled to work with Cesc again," Varane added. "His football philosophy and passion are inspiring. We understood each other perfectly when we spoke. I'm here with humility to help the team and the club grow."

With Varane's experience and Fabregas's leadership, Como aims for a strong showing in Serie A, marking a new chapter for the club and its ambitious project.
