Mikel Arteta has heaped praise on new signing Riccardo Calafiori following the Italian defender’s impressive debut in Arsenal’s 2-0 victory over Lyon. The Emirates Cup clash marked the end of Arsenal’s pre-season campaign, and Calafiori’s performance quickly won over the home crowd, signaling a promising start to his career in North London.

Calafiori, who joined Arsenal from Bologna for £42 million, was greeted with a rapturous reception when he entered the pitch after halftime. The versatile defender started at left-back and later switched to center-back, showcasing his adaptability—a trait that Arteta believes will be invaluable to the Gunners.

"I just love it when the fans react like that to one of your own,” Arteta said after the match. “The way you feel it straight away, it’s love, you are respected, they are right behind you. And that’s an unbelievable platform for someone to join our club.”

Arteta went on to highlight Calafiori’s versatility, emphasizing how the defender’s ability to play multiple positions will be a significant asset to Arsenal. “He brings a lot of versatility because he can play in two or three different positions and especially in attack, occupy different spaces because he’s a real defender,” Arteta continued. “When you see his press and physicality, how he goes into duels, it’s unbelievable. And then obviously he’s done a lot last year, he’s a player than can improve us.”

Calafiori’s debut added to an already positive pre-season for Arsenal, which included a draw with Bournemouth, a win over Manchester United, and a defeat to Liverpool during their tour of the USA. The win over Lyon, capped by headed goals from William Saliba and Gabriel, set a positive tone as the Gunners prepare for their Premier League opener against Wolves.

Arteta also provided updates on other key players, confirming that Jurrien Timber’s foot injury is “fine” while Takehiro Tomiyasu will be sidelined for several weeks due to a knee issue. With the Premier League season just days away, Arteta expressed confidence in his squad’s readiness.

“The team was exceptional, especially in the first half, we played at the highest level,” Arteta said. “Overall, it’s been a positive pre-season. The tour and a lot of people put in a lot of effort to make it work. And it was a success, and then the two games we’ve had here have been very competitive. So overall, very pleased.”

As Arsenal looks ahead to their opening match against Wolves, the team’s solid pre-season and the addition of players like Calafiori have fueled optimism for a successful campaign.
