Anutin Charnvirakul

Thailand’s current Deputy PM and Minister of Interior Anutin Charnvirakul has announced that his demanding work schedule has taken a toll on his health, revealing that he has been diagnosed with Supraventricular Tachycardia (SVT), a type of arrhythmia that causes an irregular heartbeat.

Probably best known to foreigners as the man behind the decriminalisation of cannabis in 2022 during his term as public health minister, Anutin is known for his spontaneous stabs at foreigners from time to time, and his super-safe response to the Covid-19 pandemic in Thailand.

Doctors performed an electric cardioversion on Anutin to restore his irregular heart rhythm. He assured Thai media that his health is improving, although he admitted to neglecting exercise and sleep due to excessive use of his phone. Anutin says it’s his intention to prioritise rest and better manage his schedule moving forward.

Initially fearing a more severe heart condition, Anutin was relieved to learn that he had a treatable arrhythmia. His doctors have advised him to rest and minimise stress in his dual role as a deputy PM and interior minister
