West Ham United are set to bolster their defense ahead of Julen Lopetegui's first season as manager. Reports suggest they have agreed on a deal with Nice for the highly sought-after defender Jean-Clair Todibo.

Todibo has been a standout player for Nice since making his move permanent from Barcelona in the summer of 2021, following a successful six-month loan spell. His impressive performances earned him a call-up to the French national team and attracted interest from top clubs across Europe, including Manchester United and West Ham. After Manchester United's pursuit was hampered by multi-club ownership rules, West Ham seized the opportunity to secure Todibo's services.

According to Santi Aouna, West Ham and Nice have reached an agreement for Todibo on a loan-to-buy basis. The deal includes a purchase option of €36 million (£30.2 million) with add-ons. However, Todibo remains hesitant about the move as he prefers a transfer to Juventus, who have also expressed interest in the French defender.

Todibo's preference for Juventus complicates the situation for West Ham. While talks between Nice and Juventus are expected, if Juventus cannot meet the financial demands, West Ham will have the upper hand in securing Todibo. Lopetegui has already strengthened his defense by signing Max Kilman from Wolverhampton Wanderers but aims to further enhance squad depth to avoid last season's issues with injuries.

Todibo has had a remarkable summer, attracting bids from several clubs. Manchester United's attempt to sign him fell through due to INEOS' ownership stakes in both Nice and Manchester United, disqualifying the transfer due to Europa League participation rules. Consequently, Manchester United shifted their focus to Leny Yoro from Lille, while Todibo remains in transfer limbo between Juventus and West Ham.

West Ham's current defensive lineup includes Kilman and Kurt Zouma. However, the lack of squad depth was a critical issue last season, prompting Lopetegui to take proactive measures to strengthen the team.
