Wayne Rooney, the legendary Manchester United striker, has made an unexpected early exit from his role as a pundit for the BBC's Euro 2024 coverage. Originally slated to cover the entire tournament, Rooney has shifted his focus to his new managerial position at Plymouth Argyle.

Rooney's departure from Germany came immediately after the Belgium vs. Ukraine match, which ended in a 0-0 draw. Speaking on the matter, BBC presenter Gary Lineker noted, "Wayne, it's your last time here because you were going to stay longer but you've got a job." Rooney confirmed his imminent return to the UK, stating, "I fly home tomorrow. The lads are back in on July 3 so I'll be home and straight down to Plymouth."

Excitement is building for Rooney as he prepares for Plymouth’s opening game of the season against Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsborough on August 11. Reflecting on the upcoming fixtures, he said, "When you see the fixtures you're looking through the opening games, the Christmas schedule and stuff. I'm really excited."

This new role at Plymouth Argyle marks Rooney's fourth managerial position, following his previous tenures at Derby County, D.C. United, and Birmingham City. Despite facing challenges at Birmingham, Rooney’s appointment has been met with optimism. Neil Dewsnip, Plymouth's director of football who previously coached Rooney at Everton's academy, expressed confidence in his capabilities: "Birmingham City didn't go great for him but even Sir Alex Ferguson has experienced the sack at St. Mirren. What do they say? The path to success is not always a straight line?"

Dewsnip highlighted Rooney’s resilience and ability to learn from past experiences, adding, "He's had a bump in the road but at Derby he was up against the odds and did well while D.C. United almost made the MLS play-offs. Knowing the kind of person he is he would have learned from all that. He will use that as incredible motivation."

Rooney’s proactive approach in pursuing the Plymouth Argyle job was evident. Dewsnip revealed that Rooney was among 80 candidates who expressed interest and was ultimately selected after a rigorous interview process. "Wayne was one of them and deservedly won the day. He didn't receive any favours. It came through very strongly that he was anxious to be actively involved again despite making a very favourable impression as a TV pundit," Dewsnip concluded.

As Wayne Rooney transitions from the broadcast booth back to the football pitch, fans and analysts alike will be watching closely to see how he navigates this new chapter in his managerial career.
