Three Midfielders Manchester United Could Target After Manuel Ugarte Decision

Manchester United are allegedly now unlikely to sign Manuel Ugarte this summer despite being heavily linked with a move for the Paris Saint-Germain midfielder in recent weeks.

The Red Devils are determined to bring in a central midfielder this summer and had identified Ugarte as their leading target in that area. However, according to The Athletic, Man United have now cooled their interest and are instead focusing on other targets, with the club unwilling to meet PSG's asking price of around €60m (£51.4m).

With that in mind, let's take a look at three alternatives to Ugarte, as Manchester United remain determined to improve their midfield options before the transfer window closes.

Martin Zubimendi

Manchester United placed a €60m (£51m) bid for Zubimendi, which would have activated the release clause in his Real Sociedad contract. However, the Spain international is reportedly keen to stay with Real Sociedad for at least one more season.

Zubimendi scored four goals and registered one assist in 45 appearances for Real Sociedad last season and played a key role in Spain's triumph at the European Championship. With his strong connection to Real Sociedad since 2011 and five years in the first team, Zubimendi might find it hard to turn down a move to the 20-time English champions if the opportunity arises.

Hjulmand

Hjulmand has huge admirers at Old Trafford, including head coach Erik ten Hag. The Denmark international, who impressed for Sporting last season with four goals and four assists in 49 appearances, is viewed as a potential midfield addition.

Although Man United will not meet his €80m (£67.4m) release clause, negotiations with Sporting could see the midfielder make a move to Old Trafford. An excellent passer and reader of the game, Hjulmand could be the perfect partner for Kobbie Mainoo in the Red Devils midfield.

Adrien Rabiot

Rabiot is available on a free transfer this summer after failing to agree on a new contract with Juventus. The France international has attracted interest from Arsenal and Liverpool, but Manchester United are also keen.

With Ugarte out of the picture, the 20-time English champions could accelerate their interest in Rabiot. While the 29-year-old will demand a significant contract, the absence of a transfer fee makes this deal enticing. Rabiot's experience at the highest level would be valuable for Manchester United, but the club will need to act quickly to secure his signature before he is snapped up by another team.
