Roma's Newest Addition: Matthew Ryan Joins on Bosman Deal

Serie A giants AS Roma have made headlines with the signing of Australian international goalkeeper Matthew Ryan on a Bosman deal. According to renowned journalist Gianluca Di Marzio, the 32-year-old has secured a short-term contract with the Giallorossi following the expiration of his contract with AZ Alkmaar at the end of June.

Despite there being no prior indications of Roma's interest in the seasoned goalkeeper, negotiations progressed swiftly, culminating in Ryan's move to join Daniele De Rossi's squad. However, it is expected that Ryan will not serve as the first-choice goalkeeper for Roma in the upcoming season.

Mile Svilar has firmly established himself as the club's primary option between the posts since De Rossi took over from Jose Mourinho in January. Portuguese veteran Rui Patricio, who was a regular starter under Mourinho, saw his starting position overtaken by the young Svilar midway through last season.

Matthew Ryan emerged as a strategic market opportunity for Roma. Without this chance, Roma might not have considered offering him a contract, particularly in light of Svilar's impressive performance last season. After demonstrating his skills at AZ Alkmaar, Ryan is prepared for his first venture into Serie A.

Although this is Ryan's debut with an Italian club, he brings a wealth of experience to the Stadio Olimpico. Prior to his stint with AZ Alkmaar, Ryan played for notable clubs including Club Brugge, KRC Genk, Valencia, Arsenal, Brighton, Real Sociedad, and FC Copenhagen.

In other transfer news, Roma have agreed to let Houssem Aouar join Saudi Pro League side Al-Ittihad.
