Phuket Launches Urgent Cleanup at Karon Beach to Boost Tourism

Phuket officials have initiated an urgent cleanup operation at Karon Beach, spearheaded by Governor Sophon Suwannarat, to address growing concerns about the beach's impact on tourism. The initiative aims to improve beach management and enhance visitor experience.

Governor Suwannarat led a crucial meeting with the local Joint Public and Private Sector Committee on Economic Development to discuss the regulation of beach amenities at Karon Beach, Kata Beach, and Patong Beach. The primary focus of this cleanup drive is to remove excess beach umbrellas and sunbeds that have been crowding the area and obstructing public walkways.

A deputy governor has been assigned to oversee the cleanup operation, which will be carried out by the committee without requiring prior approval from the governor. This move underscores the urgency and importance of maintaining cleanliness and order on Phuket's popular beaches.

Governor Suwannarat highlighted that while Hat Patong has successfully designated a 10% area for sunbeds and umbrellas, Karon Beach has struggled with effective management. “Karon Beach is in a worrying state due to the crowding of umbrellas and sunbeds, which obstruct public walkways,” he said. This congestion is believed to be a deterrent for visitors, potentially impacting the tourism sector.

Phan Thongchumnum, Vice President of Prince of Songkla University, supported the governor's concerns, noting that the proliferation of sunbeds and umbrellas is unappealing to tourists. He recommended that these zones be limited to no more than 10% of the beach area to improve overall visitor satisfaction.

To address these issues, local officials are developing beach zoning measures for Karon Beach. The Karon Beach Subdistrict Office will work with tour operators to clear some of the beach umbrellas and sunbeds and remove unsightly beachfront billboards. This collaborative effort aims to restore the beach's appeal and functionality.

Sutjapol Thongsom, a member of the Phuket Chamber of Commerce, emphasized the need for a proactive approach to beach regulation. He acknowledged that swift action might affect the support base of local leaders but stressed that a comprehensive cleanup is essential. Officials who neglect their duties in this regard may face legal repercussions, as reported by Bangkok Post.

This cleanup initiative is crucial for preserving Phuket's tourism industry, a significant contributor to the province's economy. By addressing the issues at Karon Beach, Phuket aims to enhance its attractiveness as a top travel destination and safeguard its status as a major foreign exchange earner.
