Authorities Investigate Violent Assault and Land Dispute at Phuket's Nui Beach

In the wake of a violent assault at Nui Beach last month, authorities have intensified their efforts to resolve a contentious land dispute involving two claimed plots at the popular tourist destination. The conflict, which escalated into physical violence, centers around an 18-rai portion of land designated for agricultural use within the Agricultural Land Reform Zone (ALRO).

Background of the Assault

The altercation, which occurred on May 23, resulted from a heated argument over land ownership claims. Chalothorn "Boy" Chotipanang, identified as one of the main assailants, has been charged with assault, while police have issued charges against at least three others involved in the attack. Phuket Provincial Police Commander Pol Maj Gen Sinlert Sukhum emphasized that the police are committed to impartiality and legal action against all criminal offenses related to the incident.

Inspection and Survey Efforts

Rear Admiral Tinnakorn Kanjantamee, Deputy Director of the Phuket branch of Internal Security Operations Command (ISOC), led an inspection team to Nui Beach last week. The team included officials from the Phuket Forestry Center, Karon Police, local district officials, Karon Municipality, and Phuket MP Chalermpong Saengdee.

The survey aimed to delineate the boundaries of the ALRO land and the Nak Kerd Mountain Range National Reserve Forest. Manit Eksuwan, a legal expert at the ALRO Phuket office, explained that the survey would help create a definitive map to resolve the dispute. Four key points were identified for initial surveying, with conclusions expected within a week.

Collaborative Efforts

Sorasak Rananan, Director of the Phuket Forestry Center, highlighted the collaborative efforts among various sectors. Surveyors from the Forest Resource Management Office 12, Krabi Branch, joined the operation to ensure clarity. The Phuket Provincial Police Special Operations Unit maintained order during the survey, underscoring the seriousness of the investigation.

Police and Legal Actions

Karon Police Chief Pol Col Khundet Na Nongkhai explained that the police had a dual role: assisting ALRO and forestry officials in the boundary survey and collecting evidence for ongoing investigations. Significant progress has been made, with investigators focusing on identifying the extent of state damage and gathering complete evidence for the public prosecutor.

One offender has already surrendered, and summonses have been issued for three others involved in the assault. Despite the delay in charging these individuals, authorities are determined to resolve the case promptly. Pol Maj Gen Sinlert Sukhum had previously assured the public that summonses were pending, and the investigation continues to progress.

Conclusion

Authorities expect to achieve clear land boundaries and resolve the ownership dispute soon, providing a definitive solution to this long-standing issue. The collaborative efforts among various agencies demonstrate a strong commitment to ensuring justice and maintaining public order at Nui Beach.

This resolution is not only crucial for the involved parties but also for maintaining the integrity and appeal of one of Phuket's popular tourist destinations. As the investigation concludes, it is hoped that such incidents will be prevented in the future, promoting a safe and welcoming environment for all visitors.
