 TIME OUT RANKS BANGKOK 6TH AMONG WORLD’S BEST FOOD CITIES

The Thai government has welcomed the news that Bangkok comes in at number 6 in a list of the world’s best cities for food. For those of us living here, it’s hardly a surprise.

The list was compiled by the international lifestyle and travel magazine Time Out. Yesterday, June 5, government spokesman Chai Watcharong welcomed the capital’s high ranking.

According to the Time Out feature, trying the local cuisine is important in understanding a city. They awarded Bangkok sixth place based on a survey of thousands of diners who ranked cities for their food quality and cost.

The list consists of 20 cities in total, all recognised for their culinary offerings. Bangkok’s food was also acknowledged for being the third most affordable in the world, while the choice of dishes on offer in the Thai capital was also recognised.

Naples, Johannesburg, Lima, Ho Chi Minh City and Beijing beat out the Thai capital into 6th place in the rankings.

Time Out singles out Chinatown in Bangkok for its street food, but says the area now faces competition from Banthat Thong Road, which has become popular with both local diners and visiting tourists.

Responding to Bangkok’s ranking, Chai says PM Srettha Thavisin is proud of the capital’s appeal and its ability to attract visitors through its culture, cuisine, and lively atmosphere.

Chai added that the government remains committed to promoting tourism in cities outside of Bangkok and to create jobs and enhance the quality of life for locals in those areas.
