This initiative is launched in honor of His Majesty the King on the occasion of his 6th Cycle Birthday Anniversary, celebrated on July 28. The launch event will be held at Patong Beach and will be broadcast live.

Coastal Conservation Projects

Last week, the central government launched two major coastal projects: the 72 Thai Beaches Conservation and the Phuket Maritime Conservation Sandbox. These projects commemorate His Majesty the King's 72nd birthday anniversary and aim to maintain maritime biodiversity and enhance the country's tourist attractions.

The opening ceremony for these projects was led by PM Settha and Natural Resources and Environment (MNRE) Minister Pol Gen Phatcharavat Wongsuwan. The event was attended by representatives from various related sectors.

Objectives and Goals

PM Settha highlighted the significance of oceanic and coastal sites as prominent tourism resources, generating at least B2 trillion of national income annually. The conservation projects aim to raise public awareness of natural conservation and support the maritime and coastal ecotourism industries. Key approaches include advocating for eco-friendly packaging and reducing single-use plastic.

The 72 Thai Beaches Conservation Project

The 72 Thai Beaches Conservation project is a collaboration between the interior, tourism and sports ministries, and the MNRE. It will be implemented in seven major coastal provinces: Trat, Rayong, Chon Buri, Surat Thani, Trang, Krabi, and Phuket. The project focuses on sustainability and cleanliness of the beaches and incorporates a national plastic waste management plan.

The project is implemented through four main measures:

  1. Promotion of eco-friendly packaging production and sales.
  2. Promotion of eco-friendly packaging use.
  3. Promotion of waste management.
  4. Waste collection.

At least 80% of operators in the areas are expected to switch to eco-friendly packaging, while local authorities are tasked with developing proper waste management measures.

The Phuket Maritime Conservation Sandbox

The Phuket Maritime Conservation Sandbox aims to eliminate the use of single-use plastics and enhance waste management to prevent waste from flowing into the sea from rivers and canals. Both projects are designed to attract visitors and promote sustainable conservation efforts.

Conclusion

Prime Minister Settha Thavisin's visit to Phuket marks a significant step in the country’s efforts to conserve its beach and marine resources. The launch of these conservation projects not only honors His Majesty the King but also underscores the importance of sustainable tourism and environmental stewardship. Through collaborative efforts and strategic measures, Thailand aims to preserve its natural beauty and promote eco-friendly practices for future generations.
