Manchester United are at a crossroads with their £84.3m pursuit of Bayern Munich defender Matthijs de Ligt, as alternative options present themselves. According to reports from Portuguese outlet O Jogo, Erik ten Hag and INEOS are exploring various defensive recruits, with Antonio Silva from Benfica being a primary target this summer.

Despite already securing highly-rated French teenager Leny Yoro, Manchester United remain interested in De Ligt and Everton's Jarrad Branthwaite. However, negotiations for both players have hit a standstill, with the selling clubs standing firm. United have faced setbacks with two rejected bids for Branthwaite.

Although United have verbally agreed on personal terms with De Ligt—who captained Ajax under Ten Hag—they are considering other options. Further signings will depend on the club sanctioning sales. The O Jogo report suggests United could potentially lower De Ligt's transfer fee, initially estimated at €50m (£42.2m).

Antonio Silva, who has 13 caps for Portugal and three years remaining on his contract at Estádio da Luz, is another key figure in United's transfer plans.

In addition, reports from Spanish publication SPORT highlight former Chelsea defender Marcos Alonso as a potential target for United's left-back position. The Manchester Evening News indicates that INEOS is open to reinforcing this area, especially with uncertainties surrounding Tyrell Malacia.

Marcos Alonso, 33, is a free agent after his departure from Barcelona this summer. Having made 212 appearances for Chelsea between 2016 and 2022, Alonso brings a wealth of experience from his stints with Real Madrid, Fiorentina, and other clubs.

Stay tuned for more updates as Manchester United navigate their transfer strategy, balancing between high-profile pursuits and emerging opportunities to strengthen their defense.
