Conor Gallagher, a pivotal player in Mauricio Pochettino's Chelsea side last season, has finally broken his silence on his move to Atletico Madrid. Gallagher, who made 37 Premier League appearances under Pochettino, completed a £33.7m transfer earlier this month. Despite his consistent presence on the pitch, new Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca reportedly informed Gallagher that he would be a squad player, which prompted the club to consider offers for the midfielder, especially as he was in the final year of his contract.

Reflecting on his time at Chelsea, Gallagher expressed gratitude for Pochettino’s trust in him. “Last season, I had a good season with Chelsea, and the fans appreciated what I did on the pitch. I am very thankful to the fans and to Pochettino for giving me the platform to express myself,” Gallagher said in a recent interview.

When asked about his fit in Maresca’s system, Gallagher rejected claims that he wasn't technically good enough to succeed, stating: “I don't think that's true. I believe in my abilities, and I showed what I could do last season.”

Despite the abrupt end to his time at his boyhood club, Gallagher holds no ill will. “Chelsea will always hold a special place in my heart. It’s the club I grew up in, and I have so many good memories. I’m thankful for everything, from the academy to the first team. The fans, especially last season, made me feel appreciated, which made my time there even more special.”

Now part of Diego Simeone's Atletico Madrid squad, Gallagher has already made a few appearances and is currently with the England national team, preparing for their UEFA Nations League clash against the Republic of Ireland. As Gallagher looks to the future, his departure from Chelsea marks the end of one chapter and the beginning of another in his career.

Gallagher will be looking to earn his 19th England cap in the upcoming fixtures, as the Three Lions face off against Ireland at the Aviva Stadium and then Finland at Wembley.
