Liverpool's new manager, Arne Slot, may have only recently taken charge at Anfield, but he is already facing a significant transfer dilemma. Despite a relatively quiet transfer window, with only two new signings – goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili, who was immediately loaned back to Valencia, and winger Federico Chiesa – Liverpool has begun the season with impressive victories over Ipswich Town and Brentford. However, the potential loss of three key players next summer poses a considerable challenge.

The contracts of Mohamed Salah, Trent Alexander-Arnold, and Virgil van Dijk are all set to expire in the summer of 2025, raising the possibility that these crucial Anfield stars could leave for free. This situation allows them to begin discussions with overseas clubs as early as January 2025, creating an urgent need for Slot to address their futures.

Among these players, Trent Alexander-Arnold, at just 25 years old, stands out as one of the Premier League's top talents, and his potential departure is causing particular concern. Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher recently emphasized the importance of retaining Alexander-Arnold. Speaking with Sky Sports, Carragher stated, "The most important one is Trent because of his age. There will be more longevity there. The other two: at that stage of their careers, any club in the world will want them, but there's no better club than Liverpool for a chance of winning trophies and a Champions League."

While Salah and Van Dijk are both in their 30s, making them more likely candidates for a final lucrative move abroad – possibly to a league like Saudi Arabia – Alexander-Arnold represents a long-term asset for Liverpool. Carragher continued, "Salah and Van Dijk – maybe they will want a big payday at the end of their careers, and they go to Saudi or something. I understand players of that age doing that. But if it wasn't that, I'm still confident Liverpool will get those deals done.

However, concerns around Alexander-Arnold's contract situation have grown. The England international was recently seen appearing frustrated after being substituted, sparking rumors about his future at the club. Carragher added, "I'm more worried about Trent, especially with the situation last week of him coming off and looking a bit frustrated. I'm not sure what the hold-up is on that, because I'm sure Liverpool will have offered him whatever they can. I was more confident about him six months ago, but it seems to have shifted."

As Slot navigates his first season as Liverpool manager, he must also balance the need to keep his squad competitive while addressing these looming contract expirations. The uncertainty surrounding Salah, Van Dijk, and Alexander-Arnold’s futures is a pressing issue that could define Liverpool's success both on and off the pitch in the coming seasons.

For now, Slot and Liverpool's management must strategize to ensure that these key players remain at Anfield or, at the very least, secure favorable terms if they decide to move on. As the January window approaches, all eyes will be on Liverpool and their new manager to see how they handle this immediate transfer challenge.
