RUSSIAN MAN HOSPITALISED IN PHUKET AFTER “MANIC EPISODE”

A Russian man has been taken to Chalong Hospital after police described him as showing signs of “mania”. Officers were responding to a call from the hotel where the man was staying, after he became frantic and tried to jump from his fifth floor room.

The Phuket News reports that the hotel alerted police at around 3.30pm on Monday, June 3, saying the 44 year old Russian was making loud noises and seemed to be having a “manic episode”.

The police arrived at the hotel accompanied by a Russian interpreter and started talking to the man through his locked room door, in an attempt to calm him down. Wiwat Chamnankit, deputy chief of Karon Police, says they eventually managed to calm the man down sufficiently to allow them to enter the room.

Officers asked hotel staff to unlock the door and then quickly entered the room and restrained the Russian. He was then taken to Chalong Hospital and officers are now coordinating with the Russian Embassy.

It’s not known what triggered the man’s behaviour but according to the report, officers found a quantity of cannabis and foil paper in his room.
