Ancient Sandstone Unearthed in Chaiya District: A Link to the Srivijaya Kingdom

A significant historical discovery has been made in Chaiya district, where an ancient sandstone believed to date back to the Srivijaya Kingdom has been unearthed within the grounds of Wat Palilaik temple. This remarkable find sheds light on the rich cultural heritage of the region and offers new insights into its historical connections.

Discovery by History Tour Group

The artefact was discovered by a history tour group visiting Wat Palilaik in tambon Lamet of Chaiya district on Tuesday. The group promptly reported the find to Chaiya district chief, Chaowalit Rodjanarat, suggesting that the sandstone, adorned with beautiful carvings, could be over 1,000 years old.

Expert Examination

Following the report, Mr. Chaowalit enlisted the expertise of Kitti Chinjoreontham, chairman of the Chaiya National Museum, and Phra Achan Mahathongchai, the abbot of Wat Rattanaram temple, to examine the artefact on-site. Mr. Kitti confirmed the sandstone as an ancient object, likely dating back to the 13th-14th centuries BE, around the end of the Srivijaya Kingdom era.

Historical Significance

Mr. Kitti suggested that the sandstone might have served as the base of a statue of the Hindu god Narayana, previously found in the area. The intricate carvings on the sandstone bear a striking resemblance to those found at ancient Khmer castles, indicating a significant cultural and historical exchange between these ancient civilizations.

Preservation and Further Examination

The artefact is currently being safeguarded at Wat Rattanaram while awaiting further examination by experts from the Fine Arts Department. This detailed investigation is expected to provide more definitive insights into the artefact's origins and historical context.

Conclusion

The discovery of this ancient sandstone in Chaiya district is a testament to the rich historical tapestry of the region. It not only highlights the cultural connections of the Srivijaya Kingdom but also underscores the importance of preserving and studying such artefacts to gain a deeper understanding of our shared heritage. As experts continue to examine this remarkable find, it promises to offer new perspectives on the history and culture of ancient Southeast Asia.
