Fenerbahce vs Liverpool: Late Comeback Stuns Reds 3-2

Fenerbahce vs Liverpool ended in a shock 3-2 win for the Turkish side in the Champions League on Wednesday, November 4. Liverpool led twice at the Sukru Saracoglu Stadium in Istanbul, but Fenerbahce hit back each time and scored the winner with about ten minutes left, BBC Sport and Liverpool's official website reported.

How Fenerbahce vs Liverpool unfolded

Andoni Iraola made five changes to his Liverpool team. Joe Gomez, Kostas Tsimikas, Victor Munoz, Rio Ngumoha and Dominik Szoboszlai came into the side.

The visitors started well. Munoz had early chances on the right, and Jeremy Jacquet headed wide. Liverpool went ahead on 25 minutes when teenager Trey Nyoni ran onto a loose ball in the box and his deflected shot found the net. It was his first senior goal for the club.

Fenerbahce replied quickly. Irfan Can Kahveci hit the bar, and about four minutes after Nyoni's goal, former Manchester United forward Mason Greenwood levelled with a free kick from around 20 yards that deflected past Alisson.

A wild final 20 minutes

Liverpool controlled much of the second half, and Iraola brought on Alexander Isak, Cody Gakpo and Florian Wirtz. Two of them combined to restore the lead on 69 minutes, when Gakpo crossed from the left and Isak headed in with his first touch.

Fenerbahce hit back again almost at once. Archie Brown, a 24-year-old English defender who started his career at Derby County, scored at the back post after a short corner. Minutes later Vedat Muriqi headed in from a long ball into the box to complete the comeback.

Goal summary:

  • 25': Trey Nyoni, 0-1
  • Around 29': Mason Greenwood, free kick, 1-1
  • 69': Alexander Isak, header, 1-2
  • Early 70s: Archie Brown, 2-2
  • Around 79': Vedat Muriqi, header, 3-2

Iraola: "cheap" and "messy" goals

All three Fenerbahce goals came from set pieces. Iraola called them "cheap goals" and "messy goals" and said it was frustrating because his team had believed for most of the game that they could win.

He said the noise in the stadium made it almost impossible to communicate, which he believed played a part in the mix-up before the second goal. According to the BBC, it was the latest Liverpool have ever led in a major European game and still lost.

The result ends Liverpool's perfect start in this season's Champions League after three wins from three. It is also their second defeat in four days, after losing 1-0 at home to Arsenal on Sunday.

Kuyt's farewell "miracle"

Fenerbahce were led by interim coach Dirk Kuyt, a Liverpool favourite who played for the club from 2006. He said the players had learned from Liverpool's own spirit and called the win "a miracle". Kuyt said it was Fenerbahce's first win against an English team in 18 years, the number he wore at Liverpool.

It was his last game in charge. Former Newcastle midfielder Emre Belozoglu officially takes over as head coach on Thursday. Fenerbahce have had a tough season, with four defeats in their first ten league games and a 6-0 loss at Aston Villa.

What it means for both clubs

Liverpool still have nine points from four league-phase games, but the defeat raises fresh questions about their defending at set pieces and their ability to protect a lead away from home. For Fenerbahce, it is the kind of night that can lift a difficult season. Read the full report on BBC Sport.
