Arsenal Beat Liverpool at Anfield to Go Three Points Clear
Arsenal beat Liverpool 1-0 at Anfield as Kai Havertz scored, giving the Gunners their first league win there in 14 years and a three-point lead.

Arsenal beat Liverpool 1-0 at Anfield on Sunday, with a 16th-minute goal from Kai Havertz giving the defending champions their first Premier League win at the ground in 14 years. The result puts Arsenal three points clear at the top of the table after nine matches, according to BBC Sport and an AFP report carried by the Bangkok Post.
How the match unfolded
Arsenal started fast. Declan Rice played a low cross into the box and Havertz finished from close range. Havertz had missed chances in midweek, so the goal was a welcome response.
Liverpool then had a strong spell of around 30 minutes. AFP reported that Florian Wirtz hit the bar with a free-kick from a tight angle, and Alexis Mac Allister headed a good chance over. Liverpool manager Andoni Iraola also said his side should have had a penalty when Jurrien Timber pulled Alexander Isak's shirt. Isak stayed on his feet and no penalty was given.
The second half was calmer. Alisson made a fine save from Christos Tzolis to keep Liverpool in the game, but Arsenal held on for the clean sheet.
A response after the Fleetwood shock
The win came four days after one of the biggest upsets in League Cup history. Arsenal lost to League Two side Fleetwood Town on Tuesday. After the game, Mikel Arteta told reporters that football "can take you to really bad places", but that four days later his team had done something historic. He said he was extremely proud of the players' spirit.
Arteta was Arsenal captain the last time they won a league game at Anfield, 2-0 in 2012. BBC Sport said Arsenal had gone 16 trips to Liverpool in all competitions without a win before Sunday.
Key numbers
- 24 points from nine games, the most by any team at this stage since Arsenal in 2022-23, according to BBC Sport.
- Eight wins from nine league matches.
- Six clean sheets so far this season.
- Nine points: the gap between leaders Arsenal and fifth-placed Liverpool.
What it means for the title race
Manchester City are second. Both BBC Sport and AFP noted that City are awaiting the outcome of an appeal after being found guilty of breaking Premier League financial rules, a case that could bring a points penalty. Arsenal's attack is still not at full strength. Bukayo Saka is injured and teenager Max Dowman is suspended after being sent off at Fleetwood. Even so, their defence is again setting the standard.
For Liverpool, it was only Iraola's second defeat in 14 games since he arrived from Bournemouth. He said his team must keep going because the season is still young.
