Most People Unlikely to Need Latest Covid-19 Booster, Says Virologist Yong Poovorawan

Bangkok, Thailand — According to renowned virologist Dr. Yong Poovorawan, most individuals do not need to receive a booster shot for the latest Covid-19 strain, except for vulnerable groups and the unvaccinated. The symptoms associated with this strain are relatively mild, and the vaccine, which is now a paid service, may not be necessary for the majority of the population.

Decreased Severity of Covid-19

Dr. Yong, from the Centre of Excellence in Clinical Virology at Chulalongkorn University, highlighted that the severity of Covid-19 has significantly decreased over time, akin to other respiratory illnesses. This reduction is attributed to the high vaccination rates and the development of herd immunity within the population.

High Immunity Levels

Currently, nearly 90% of the population has been infected with Covid-19 at some point. The remaining 10%, primarily elderly individuals who have limited social interaction, have managed to avoid infection since the pandemic began. This widespread exposure has contributed to the virus becoming endemic, with seasonal outbreaks now expected, similar to other respiratory diseases.

Seasonal Outbreak Patterns

In Thailand, Covid-19 outbreaks are most common during the rainy season and at the start of new school semesters. Dr. Yong noted, "In Thailand, Covid-19 outbreaks are common during the rainy season or at the start of a new school semester." He added that most patients experience mild symptoms and can manage their care at home, leading to a lower hospitalization rate compared to the same period last year.

Death and Hospitalization Rates

Dr. Yong predicts that the total number of Covid-19 deaths this year will not exceed 300, which is comparable to influenza mortality rates. He expects the severity of the disease and hospitalization rates to continue declining.

Vaccine Availability and Cost

The National Health Security Office (NHSO) no longer receives subsidies to distribute Covid-19 vaccines free of charge. As a result, healthy children, adults, and elderly individuals are not advised to get booster shots due to the high cost of the vaccine. "Anyone wishing to be vaccinated must pay for it out of their own pocket, and the vaccine is expensive. The demand for the vaccine has dropped, so supplies are limited, driving up retail costs," Dr. Yong explained.

Current Covid-19 Statistics

The Department of Disease Control (DDC) reported 1,863 Covid-19 cases requiring hospital treatment between May 26 and June 1, with an average of six deaths per week. The total number of cases has reached 20,483, with 132 deaths recorded.

Conclusion

With Covid-19 becoming an endemic illness and symptoms generally mild, Dr. Yong Poovorawan advises that booster shots are not necessary for most people. This guidance, coupled with the high cost of the vaccine, suggests that only vulnerable groups and those unvaccinated should consider receiving a booster. As Thailand navigates seasonal outbreaks, the focus remains on managing and minimizing severe cases to maintain public health.
