The State Railway of Thailand (SRT) is embarking on an ambitious project to construct a new double-track railway linking Hat Yai in Songkhla province with Sungai Kolok in Narathiwat province. This 34.59 billion baht initiative aims to transform transportation and boost economic development in Thailand’s southern region.

Project Overview

Feasibility Study and Timeline

The SRT is seeking an 80-million-baht budget for a feasibility study, expected to conclude in 2026. Following this, the project will progress through design (2026-2027), environmental impact assessment (2027-2028), and cabinet approval (2028). Land expropriation and franchise bidding are slated for 2028-2030, with construction beginning in 2029 and service launch anticipated in 2034.

Railway Specifications

Route and Infrastructure

The proposed railway will span 216 kilometers, featuring 27 stations, eight train stops, and two freight yards. This extensive network aims to enhance connectivity between Thailand and Malaysia, effectively linking Bangkok to the Thai Malaysian border town of Sungai Kolok.

Economic Impact

Regional Development and International Trade

Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra’s policy underlies this project, focusing on improving railway efficiency, strengthening connections with neighboring countries, and stimulating border trade, tourism, and economic growth in southern provinces.

Challenges and Considerations

Cross-Border Connectivity

While Thailand’s railway infrastructure is being upgraded, the Malaysian railway segment from Rantau Panjang to Pasir Mas has been inactive since 2005. This highlights the need for international cooperation to fully realize the project’s potential.

Broader Railway Initiatives

Additional Double-Track Projects

Beyond the Hat Yai-Sungai Kolok link, six other double-track railway projects, valued at approximately 280 billion baht, are awaiting approval. These initiatives collectively represent a significant overhaul of Thailand’s railway infrastructure.

Future of Southern Thailand’s Transportation

This ambitious railway project promises to revolutionize transportation in southern Thailand, potentially transforming the region’s economic landscape. As the project progresses, it will be crucial to address environmental concerns, ensure community integration, and foster international cooperation for maximum impact.
