Hazardous PM2.5 Levels Affect Most of Thailand

On Wednesday morning, only seven out of 77 provinces in Thailand reported safe air quality, while the majority, including the capital, were engulfed in hazardous levels of ultrafine dust. The Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency (Gistda) reported that 39 provinces were experiencing “red” levels of particulate matter 2.5 micrometers or less in diameter (PM2.5), indicating serious health risks.

Rising PM2.5 Levels Across Provinces

According to Gistda’s report at 8 AM, PM2.5 levels ranged from 76.5 to 143.1 micrograms per cubic meter over the past 24 hours. The most affected area was Samut Sakhon, followed by Pathum Thani at 133.2 µg/m³, Bangkok at 129.4 µg/m³, and Nonthaburi at 128.6 µg/m³.

Areas Impacted by Hazardous Smog

Other provinces facing hazardous smog levels include Ayutthaya, Nakhon Pathom, and Samut Prakan, among others. The government has set a safe threshold for PM2.5 at 37.5 µg/m³, highlighting the severity of the current air quality crisis.

Health Implications of Poor Air Quality

In addition to the red-level alerts, 31 provinces were categorized under orange levels of PM2.5, indicating that air quality is beginning to affect health, with readings between 41.7 and 73.4 µg/m³. These levels pose risks particularly for vulnerable groups such as children, the elderly, and those with pre-existing health conditions.

Government Response to Air Pollution Crisis

In response to the alarming air quality situation, Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin has urged immediate action to address PM2.5 pollution, focusing on measures such as halting the burning of agricultural waste and regulating emissions from vehicles and construction sites.

Urgent Need for Public Awareness

As Thailand grapples with this air pollution crisis, it is crucial for residents to stay informed about air quality levels and take necessary precautions, such as wearing masks and minimizing outdoor activities during high pollution periods. The ongoing efforts by authorities aim to mitigate the impact of these hazardous conditions on public health and safety across the nation.
