AIS E-Waste Calculator Rolls Out Across Thailand

AIS e-waste calculator tools are now available nationwide after Advanced Info Service teamed up with the Pollution Control Department and the Thailand Greenhouse Gas Management Organization to launch Thailand's first platform that applies a shared measurement standard to electronic waste. The Bangkok Post reported that organisations can log what they collect, estimate greenhouse-gas reductions and download PDF or Excel reports from one common system.

How the AIS e-waste calculator works for companies

Companies, government offices and partner groups can record types and volumes of e-waste at the AIS sustainability portal. The system then calculates quantities and estimated emission cuts under criteria aligned with international practice, giving sustainability teams numbers they can reuse in annual reports. Because every participant uses the same method, AIS says the platform can also assemble a national picture of collection and treatment for policymakers.

Thailand produces roughly 700,000 tonnes of e-waste a year, yet less than 1% enters proper treatment, the report said. AIS's longer-running "Thais Say No to E-Waste" network already spans more than 280 partners and about 3,200 collection points. Since 2019 it has gathered around 1.3 million items weighing 288,347 kilogrammes, with an estimated 130,700 kgCO₂e of avoided emissions.

Why measurement matters for Thai business and tourism hubs

Hotels, malls, telecom retailers and local administrations in visitor economies such as Phuket generate steady streams of discarded phones, chargers and appliances. Without shared metrics, each firm reports differently and regulators struggle to see gaps. The calculator is designed to close that loop before new extended-producer-responsibility rules mature. Ministry officials quoted in the coverage said a draft Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Management Act is advancing on that principle, while voluntary take-back schemes remain important in the meantime.

  • One logging standard for types and volumes of collected e-waste
  • Downloadable reports for planning and sustainability disclosure
  • Aggregated data for national analysis and policy design
  • Links to existing AIS collection networks and partner sites

For investors watching Thai corporate governance themes, the rollout sits beside other regulatory stories such as Thailand's S&P BBB+ credit rating outlook and the central bank's forthcoming BNPL and cash gold rules. Cleaner waste data will not move GDP overnight, but it lowers compliance friction for listed firms and foreign buyers that already demand auditable ESG numbers.

What Phuket operators can do now

Island hotels, dive shops and electronics retailers can join partner networks, set collection points and start logging volumes through the calculator rather than waiting for final legislation. AIS deputy chief executive Kantima Lerlertyuttitham said technology only creates value when environmental intent turns into measurable results. Pollution Control Department director-general Surin Worakijthamrong stressed the need to move end-of-life phones into proper recycling instead of mixed rubbish or informal dismantling.

TGO executive director Narkorn Takkavirapat added that clear calculation rules also unlock material recovery and, later, potential T-VER carbon-credit methodologies. Businesses that already track waste for hotel certifications or landlord green leases should map their current ledgers onto the AIS e-waste calculator fields so year-end reports stay consistent. We will follow uptake figures and any provincial collection targets that affect southern tourism provinces.

Sustainability managers should also check how the AIS e-waste calculator exports line up with supplier questionnaires and lender reporting templates, because consistent units reduce rework at audit time. Small firms can start with a simple monthly tally of phones, batteries and cables, then upload the totals once collection partners confirm weights. Early adopters will also be better placed to show customers and regulators measurable progress on waste reduction as national rules take shape.
