The Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) has issued a weather warning, predicting heavy to very heavy rainfall across 13 provinces in southern Thailand. Alongside the rainfall, a significant drop in temperatures is expected in northern regions, with flash floods and hazardous sea conditions posing additional risks.

Weather Advisory for Heavy Rain and Flood Risks in Southern Thailand

Affected Provinces and Rainfall Predictions

From November 28 to November 30, the southern provinces of Chumphon, Surat Thani, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Phatthalung, Songkhla, Pattani, Yala, Narathiwat, Phang Nga, Phuket, Krabi, Trang, and Satun are likely to experience intense rainfall.

  • Key Risks:
    • Flash floods in low-lying areas and near waterways.
    • Forest runoff in foothill regions.

Residents in these areas are urged to stay alert and take precautions against potential flooding and water damage.

Northern Thailand Braces for Temperature Drops

Cold Front From China

Northern Thailand is set to experience a 2–5°C temperature drop due to a wave of cold air from China, bringing chilly to cold weather with strong winds.

  • Central and Eastern Regions, including Bangkok, may see a smaller drop of 1–3°C.
  • The public is advised to stay warm and watch for potential fire hazards caused by dry and windy conditions.

Intensified Monsoon and Sea Warnings

Dangerous Sea Conditions

The intensifying northeast monsoon over the Gulf of Thailand and a strong low-pressure system in the South China Sea are expected to create hazardous sea conditions:

  • Wave Heights:
    • 2 metres in the upper Gulf and Andaman Sea.
    • 2–3 metres in the lower Gulf of Thailand, with higher waves during thunderstorms.
  • Advice for Mariners:
    • Avoid navigating near thunderstorms.
    • Small boats in the lower Gulf should remain ashore during this period.

How to Stay Safe During Severe Weather

TMD Recommendations

To mitigate risks associated with the extreme weather:

  • For Flood-Prone Areas:
    • Avoid traveling near waterways and low-lying regions.
    • Stay updated on evacuation plans in case of flash floods.
  • For Seafarers:
    • Postpone non-essential travel at sea.
    • Follow local authority guidelines and monitor weather updates.
  • For Cold Weather:
    • Wear warm clothing and take steps to maintain indoor warmth.

Stay Informed

The TMD will provide regular updates on its website and through its 24-hour hotline. The next announcement is expected at 5pm today, ensuring the public stays informed about any further developments.

With heavy rains, flash flood risks, and dropping temperatures on the horizon, Thailand is facing a critical weather situation. Residents and seafarers in affected regions are urged to remain vigilant, follow safety guidelines, and stay tuned to official updates. These precautions will help ensure safety as the country navigates this period of severe weather.
