Embassy Statement

Official Response

The Chinese Embassy in Thailand has issued a statement addressing questions regarding the repatriation of 40 Chinese nationals from Thailand. The embassy responded to media inquiries through its Facebook page, “Chinese Embassy Bangkok,” outlining four key questions and answers.

Legal Perspective

International Law Compliance

Addressing concerns about potential violations of international law, the embassy stated that illegal immigration is recognized as a crime under international law. The repatriation of individuals who have illegally entered a country is a standard law enforcement practice for sovereign states. The Chinese nationals returned in this case were illegal immigrants in Thailand, not refugees, and their repatriation was carried out in accordance with legal procedures.

Human Rights Concerns

Protection Assurances

Responding to concerns about potential human rights violations, the embassy emphasized that China is a country governed by law and adheres to the principle of balancing crime suppression with human rights protection. As an early signatory of the UN Convention Against Torture, China claims full compliance with its treaty obligations and maintains comprehensive laws and regulations to protect human rights in law enforcement and judicial processes.

Repatriation Process

Safe Return and Reunification

The Chinese and Thai governments carried out the repatriation in accordance with the law. After completing necessary legal procedures, the Chinese government ensured the safe return of the individuals and their reunification with their families. Local governments will work with their families to help them find jobs and develop professional skills, assisting them in overcoming hardships caused by prolonged detention in Thailand.

Future Monitoring

Continued Observation

The embassy stated that China remains open to welcoming Thai officials and citizens for future visits to Xinjiang to check on the conditions of the repatriated individuals. This demonstrates China’s commitment to transparency and cooperation with Thailand regarding the well-being of those repatriated.
