AGODA REPORTS SURGE IN JAPANESE TOURISTS PONDERING THAI HOLIDAYS
The travel website Agoda has reported a jump in searches for Thailand among Japanese holidaymakers.
As Japan’s Golden Week holiday approaches, Thailand’s rise in popularity makes it the second most popular destination for Japanese travellers. (South Korea takes the top spot.) This year’s extended Golden Week holiday kicks off on Monday, April 29, and runs until May 6.
According to a Bangkok Post report, Japanese searches for Thailand rose by 60% during the period January to mid-March, 2024, compared to the same period last year. Following Thailand in popularity among Japanese Agoda users, Taiwan comes in at number 3, with the US and Vietnam at numbers 4 and 5 respectively.
It’s no surprise that the usual spots like Bangkok, Pattaya, Chiang Mai, Phuket and Koh Samui remain popular, but Japanese travellers are also showing interest in places such as Chon Buri and Khao Lak, according to Pierre Honne, a senior director at Agoda.
“Japanese travellers are exploring more of Thailand, extending trips beyond its traditional hotspots like Bangkok and Pattaya to discover Chon Buri and the coastline of Khao Lak.”
