Once again, Kamala Beach is receiving contaminated water spilling into the well-known coastal seas.

On February 21, when the reporters from Phuket News spoke to several vacationers on the beach, they only shook their heads at the situation. At Kamala Beach, visitors did get into the water, but they took care to avoid the spot where foul-smelling black waste water was pouring straight into the ocean.

One questioned why the local authorities didn’t do something to address the problem – a problem that has been raised numerous times over the past decade. This was echoed by one of the local beach operators, who reiterated that it’s been a long-term problem at Kamala Beach.

“It’s been a problem for a long time, but no agency has come forward to solve the problem with a long-term solution. Each year after receiving a complaint, officials came to inspect the water quality, then they disappear.”

Officials are always quick to defend the foul black water, usually making excuses ranging from ‘algae’ to ‘overflow from the rain’. It hasn’t rained for weeks in Phuket.

“This has been allowed for a long time. Wastewater in the canal gives off a bad smell. It’s annoying to tourists and damages the image of Kamala Beach, which is a famous beach in Phuket.”

Meanwhile, the Phuket News reports that the Kamala OrBorTor led an event at Kamala Beach last Thursday, to launch the GoZero Waste: Save Our Ocean initiative. However, there has been no comment from local officials on the polluted water currently affecting the beach.
