A Chinese man was detained by police in Bangkok on suspicion of robbing a fellow traveler during a journey from India to Bangkok.

The 48-year-old suspect, Yi Xiangyang, was taken into custody at his hotel on Ratchadaphisek Road last Thursday, March 7, upon his arrival at Suvarnabhumi.

His arrest followed a complaint filed by Chavan Harshad Pandurang, an Indian national who had been on the same flight.

After disembarking, Mr Pandurang told police at Suvarnabhumi that his Rolex watch and US$2,800 had been stolen from him while on board Vistara flight UK123 from Mumbai to Bangkok.

According to a Bangkok Post report, officers then checked CCTV footage and based on Mr Yi’s behaviour, agreed he was the main suspect. The Chinese man was seen leaving the airport in a hurry with only carry-on luggage and getting in a taxi.

Kittipong Kittikachorn, general manager at Suvarnabhumi airport, has confirmed officers tracked Mr Yi down at his hotel, where he was arrested and charged with theft.

The penalty for theft on board an aircraft is a fine of between 20,000 and 100,000 baht and/or a prison term of up to 7 years.
