Biotechnology and Gene Editing
Biotechnology is the use of living systems and organisms to develop products or technologies that improve our lives and the health of our planet. Scientists are developing “Golden Rice” and other bio-engineered crops that are more nutritious and resistant to harsh climate conditions, which is crucial for global food security. In the environmental sector, bio-engineered microbes are being created to break down plastic waste in the oceans and clean up oil spills, offering a biological solution to man-made pollution.
The rapid progress of biotech, however, raises profound ethical questions. The possibility of “designer babies” and the long-term impact of altering the human germline are subjects of intense international debate. To ensure that biotechnology serves the common good, it is essential to establish strict ethical guidelines and regulatory frameworks that balance innovation with the preservation of human dignity and ecological balance.
