Augmented and Virtual Reality (AR/VR)
Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR) are technologies that alter our perception of reality. VR creates a fully immersive, computer-generated environment that shuts out the physical world, while AR overlays digital information onto the real world—think of digital navigation arrows appearing on a street through your glasses. Together, these technologies are moving beyond gaming and entertainment into professional training, education, and retail.
In the medical field, VR is used to train surgeons in high-risk procedures without any danger to real patients. In education, it allows students to take virtual field trips to ancient Rome or the surface of Mars, making learning an experiential journey rather than just a reading task. AR, on the other hand, is becoming a powerful tool for technicians, allowing them to see repair instructions overlaid directly onto the machinery they are fixing, thereby reducing errors and saving time.
The main challenge for AR/VR is the “form factor”—making headsets light, comfortable, and affordable enough for everyday use. There are also concerns regarding “VR motion sickness” and the social implications of people spending more time in digital worlds than in physical ones. As hardware becomes more sleek and integrated into wearable glasses, AR and VR are expected to become the next major computing platform after the smartphone.
