The Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) has issued a critical weather advisory, No. 1 (24/2024), highlighting the impending arrival of severe weather conditions in the upper Andaman Sea and along the west coast of Southern Thailand. This advisory, valid from today until Thursday (August 26-29), warns of heavy rain and strong winds that could affect several key provinces.

The intensified southwest monsoon currently sweeping over the Andaman Sea is expected to bring substantial rainfall, ranging from heavy to very heavy, across the region. Wirote Lewcharoenthrap, Director of the Southern Meteorological Center (West Coast) near Phuket airport, issued this alert at 5 AM today, urging residents and authorities to prepare for potential impacts.

Areas at Risk The provinces likely to experience the brunt of this weather include Ranong, Phang Nga, Phuket, Krabi, Trang, and Satun. These areas are advised to remain on high alert as flash floods could occur due to the heavy downpours.

Maritime Warnings The advisory also emphasizes the dangerous conditions at sea. Wind waves in the Andaman Sea are expected to grow stronger, with heights of two to three meters in the upper region and over three meters in areas experiencing thunderstorms. All maritime activities, especially those involving small vessels, are strongly discouraged. Small boats in the upper Andaman Sea should stay ashore until the weather conditions improve.

Safety Precautions Residents and travelers in the affected regions should stay updated on the latest weather developments and follow guidance from local authorities. Flash floods and strong winds can cause sudden and severe disruptions, making it crucial to remain cautious and prepared.

Stay safe and informed as Southern Thailand braces for this intense weather event.
