Trump’s Diplomatic Intervention

Calls for Immediate Ceasefire

On July 26, 2025, US President Donald Trump announced he had personally contacted the leaders of Thailand and Cambodia to push for an end to their escalating border conflict. In a social media post, Trump revealed he spoke with Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet and Thailand’s Acting Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai, both of whom expressed support for an immediate ceasefire to halt the intense fighting.

Trade Talks Tied to Peace

Tariffs Loom Over Both Nations

Trump emphasized that ongoing hostilities could jeopardize trade negotiations, warning that he would not finalize deals with Thailand or Cambodia while the conflict persists. With both countries facing potential 36% US tariffs, the stakes are high, especially for Thailand, where the US accounted for 18% of exports in 2024. The pressure underscores the economic ramifications of the border clashes.

Thailand Seeks Bilateral Resolution

Demanding Cambodia’s Sincerity

Acting Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai welcomed Trump’s intervention but insisted on direct talks with Cambodia, stressing the need for proof of Phnom Penh’s genuine commitment to peace. He requested Trump relay this message, as Thailand prefers bilateral negotiations over third-party mediation, despite offers from the US, China, and Malaysia to facilitate a truce.

Conflict Intensifies Across Border

Shelling Expands to New Areas

The Thai-Cambodian border saw a third day of heavy artillery and rocket exchanges on July 26, with fighting spreading to new regions. Phumtham noted the escalating severity, warning that the situation could spiral into a broader conflict. The clashes, centered around disputed temple areas, have displaced over 200,000 people and caused significant civilian and military casualties.

Thailand’s Political Instability

Leadership Crisis Complicates Response

The border conflict has deepened Thailand’s political turmoil, with suspended Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra facing criticism for her handling of the crisis. The fragile coalition government is under strain, as the clashes exacerbate domestic challenges, making diplomatic resolutions more urgent to stabilize both the border and Thailand’s leadership.

Global Diplomatic Efforts

Trump’s Broader Trade Agenda

While addressing the Thai-Cambodian conflict, Trump is also engaged in international diplomacy, visiting Scotland to discuss a potential trade deal with the European Union. Aiming to finalize multiple agreements before an August 1 deadline, his administration is leveraging trade negotiations to encourage peace, urging both Southeast Asian nations to prioritize de-escalation and bilateral talks.
