Soil Slide Buries Worker on Sunday

A heartbreaking accident struck Bangkok’s Rama II Road on Sunday, June 8, 2025, when a Myanmar construction worker lost his life. The collapse of a soil section at a worksite in Bang Mod subdistrict, Chom Thong district, caused a massive concrete slab to crush 39-year-old Mr. Mew while he worked on drainage pipes, highlighting the dangers faced by laborers in the city’s bustling construction zones.

Rescue Efforts Fall Short

Worker Trapped in Muddy Trench

The incident occurred near Sombunwit School on the outbound lane, part of a closed-off elevated expressway construction area. Emergency crews rushed to the scene after a report of a worker trapped in a three-meter-deep trench filled with muddy water. Despite finding Mr. Mew with a faint pulse and using pumps to free him from the slab, he passed away shortly after arriving at Bangpakok 9 Hospital.

Investigation into the Collapse

Authorities Probe Site Conditions

Colleagues reported that the ground unexpectedly gave way during drainage pipe installation under the elevated road, burying Mr. Mew under soil and concrete. Authorities are now gathering evidence and interviewing the site supervisor and witnesses to uncover the collapse’s cause, aiming to improve safety standards at construction sites across Bangkok in 2025.

Part of Major Infrastructure Project

Expressway Expansion Under Scrutiny

The site is linked to the Rama III–Dao Khanong–Western Outer Ring Road expressway project, managed by the Expressway Authority of Thailand (EXAT). This development will eventually tie into the Bang Khun Thian–Ban Phaeo intercity motorway (M82), raising questions about oversight and safety protocols as the region pushes forward with critical infrastructure enhancements.
