Denying Personal Feud Claims

Rejecting Family Dispute Rumors

Former Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra dismissed speculations that the Thai-Cambodian border conflict stems from a personal rift between his family and former Cambodian leader Hun Sen. Speaking during a visit to support displaced civilians in Ubon Ratchathani, Thaksin emphasized that the clashes, which have caused significant casualties, are driven by Cambodia’s dissatisfaction with Thailand, not a familial dispute.

Military Operations Take Priority

Advocating for Independent Action

Thaksin, celebrating his 76th birthday on Saturday, called for the Thai military to be given full authority to complete their operations before pursuing ceasefire talks. He rejected allegations of political interference, asserting that the armed forces should handle the crisis professionally. His stance underscores the need for a strategic military response to restore stability along the contested border.

Bilateral Resolution Preferred

Skepticism Toward Mediation

While some foreign leaders, including Malaysia’s Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, offered to mediate as Asean chair, Thaksin expressed confidence in resolving the conflict bilaterally. He stated that Thailand is open to dialogue with Cambodia but sees no immediate need for intermediaries unless the situation demands it, highlighting a preference for direct negotiations to address the escalating tensions.

Supporting Displaced Communities

Visiting Evacuees in Ubon Ratchathani

Thaksin’s visit to Det Udom municipality in Ubon Ratchathani aimed to uplift evacuees displaced by the border violence. As the de facto leader of the ruling Pheu Thai Party, he has increased his public presence amid his daughter Paetongtarn’s suspension as prime minister, pending a Constitutional Court ruling on her handling of a leaked conversation with Hun Sen. His actions reflect an effort to provide leadership during a turbulent period.

Public Confrontation Sparks Tension

Local Woman Challenges Thaksin

A heated moment unfolded when a local woman, identified as Miew, confronted Thaksin, questioning his ties with Hun Sen and blaming him for the ongoing conflict’s impact on Si Sa Ket residents. Expressing frustration over the displacement of her relatives, she accused Thaksin of prioritizing personal interests over Thai citizens. Security escorted her out, defusing the situation, but her outburst highlighted local discontent.

Political Scrutiny Intensifies

Thaksin’s Role Under Fire

Critics have accused Thaksin of exerting undue influence over government affairs despite holding no official position, a claim that could carry legal consequences if substantiated. Miew’s public criticism echoed broader sentiments, with some locals feeling neglected amid the crisis. Thaksin’s insistence on military action before talks, coupled with his rejection of personal feud narratives, aims to refocus attention on national security and unity.
