Revamping a Cultural Legacy

From Otop to ThaiWORKS

On July 9, 2025, former Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra made a vibrant return to the public stage at the SPLASH – Soft Power Forum 2025 in Bangkok, unveiling ThaiWORKS, a modernized evolution of his 20-year-old One Tambon, One Product (Otop) initiative. Held at the Queen Sirikit National Convention Center, the event showcased Thailand’s ambition to elevate its creative industries globally, with Thaksin championing a platform to empower local artisans through design and technology.

A Vision for Economic Growth

Harnessing Soft Power for Prosperity

Thaksin’s address, themed “Crafting the Future: From Otop to ThaiWORKS and Beyond,” highlighted soft power’s potential to drive economic growth and national unity. By promoting Thai culture—spanning food, fashion, and film—the government aims to attract tourists and investors while strengthening global ties. ThaiWORKS builds on Otop’s success, which saw sales soar from 2 billion baht in 2003 to over 40 billion baht the following year, with exports reaching markets like Japan.

Modernizing Thai Craftsmanship

Integrating Design and Global Marketing

ThaiWORKS seeks to transform Otop by integrating modern design, technology, and global marketing strategies. Thaksin noted that Thai artisans, while immensely talented, are often limited by outdated approaches to branding and packaging. Drawing inspiration from Japan’s village-based production models, ThaiWORKS aims to equip small businesses with the tools to compete internationally, ensuring their products resonate with modern consumers.

Overcoming Global Competition

Addressing Challenges from Imports

A key challenge for ThaiWORKS is the rising competition from Chinese imports, which threatens local small businesses. Thaksin proposed a social enterprise model where intellectual property rights are collectively held, fostering collaboration between established Thai brands and smaller producers. This strategy aims to scale up local enterprises, helping them carve out a stronger presence in global markets despite external pressures.

A High-Profile Collaboration

Partnering with Global Expertise

To bring ThaiWORKS to life, Thaksin has enlisted Peter Arnell, a renowned global branding expert known for his work with major corporations. Arnell’s involvement signals a serious commitment to elevating Thai products, with plans to place them in prestigious retail spaces like Fifth Avenue and the Champs-Élysées. This partnership underscores Thailand’s ambition to blend cultural heritage with cutting-edge branding for maximum global impact.

A Platform for the Future

Empowering Artisans and Entrepreneurs

ThaiWORKS is more than a rebrand—it’s a bold vision for Thailand’s creative economy. By fostering innovation and collaboration, the platform aims to empower artisans and entrepreneurs to dream big while staying rooted in cultural traditions. Thaksin’s call to “think new, act new” reflects his belief that modernizing Thailand’s soft power can navigate economic challenges, positioning the nation as a global leader in cultural innovation.
