Addressing Thai-Cambodian Border Issues

Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra visited Surin province to assess efforts to reduce tensions with Cambodia, urging security agencies to standardize operating hours at border checkpoints. Her trip underscores the government’s commitment to facilitating cross-border trade and movement amid recent disputes.

Surin’s Strategic Border Role

125-Kilometer Frontier with Cambodia

Surin Governor Chamnan Cheunta briefed the prime minister at Kap Choeng Hospital, noting that four districts—Kap Choeng, Buachet, Phanom Dong Rak, and Sangkha—share a 125-kilometer border with Cambodia. The province features 54 natural routes and the permanent Chong Jom checkpoint, critical for regional connectivity.

Disrupted Checkpoint Hours

Misaligned Schedules Hinder Movement

The Chong Jom checkpoint, previously open from 8am to 10pm, now operates only on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 8am to 3pm due to heightened tensions. Cambodia’s recent adjustment to 9am-4pm has created a narrow six-hour window, prompting the prime minister to call for synchronized hours.

Efforts to Coordinate with Cambodia

Army Engages in Diplomatic Outreach

Lt Gen Boonsin Padklang, 2nd Army Region commander, acknowledged the political complexities but committed to negotiating with Cambodian counterparts for aligned checkpoint schedules. The prime minister praised his crisis management, emphasizing the need for cooperation to stabilize the border situation.

Combating Misinformation

Direct Reporting to Deputy PMs

Paetongtarn instructed local agencies to counter misinformation and fake news fueling the conflict, directing them to report directly to Deputy Prime Ministers Phumtham Wechayachai and Anutin Charnvirakul. This streamlined communication aims to ensure accurate information and effective crisis response.

Morale Boost for Troops

Visit to Suranaree Task Force

The prime minister visited the Suranaree Task Force headquarters in Kap Choeng to uplift soldiers’ spirits. Her presence reinforced government support for frontline personnel working to maintain security and de-escalate tensions along the volatile Thai-Cambodian border.

Progress in Chong Bok Area

Joint Patrols to Ease Tensions

Lt Gen Boonsin reported improvements in the Chong Bok area of Ubon Ratchathani, where a May 28 skirmish sparked the dispute. An agreement with Cambodia for unarmed patrols and thrice-weekly meetings aims to reduce hostilities, though tight security persists ahead of Saturday’s Joint Border Committee meeting.
