Suvarnabhumi Airport: Small to Medium-Scale Maintenance Hub

Enhancing Service Capabilities for Airlines

Thailand is taking significant steps to solidify its position as a regional aviation hub. The Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand (CAAT) has unveiled plans to establish aircraft maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) centers across the country. Suvarnabhumi Airport, Thailand’s primary gateway, has been designated as a center for small-to-medium-scale maintenance operations.

U-Tapao Airport: Large-Scale Aircraft Servicing Center

Expanding Maintenance Capabilities in Rayong

In addition to Suvarnabhumi, U-Tapao Airport in Rayong has been assigned the responsibility for large-scale aircraft servicing. This strategic decision aims to enhance Thailand’s aviation infrastructure and attract more airlines to conduct their maintenance operations within the country.

CAAT’s Vision: Immediate Maintenance Upon Landing

Streamlining Aircraft Inspection and Maintenance Processes

CAAT director ACM Manat Chavanaprayoon emphasized the importance of having on-site aircraft maintenance centers. The goal is to enable airlines operating in and flying to Thailand to conduct aircraft inspection and maintenance immediately upon landing, significantly improving operational efficiency.

Master Plan Development: A Year-Long Process

Drafting a Comprehensive Strategy for MRO Implementation

The CAAT is currently in the process of drafting a master plan to implement the MRO policy. This comprehensive strategy is expected to take approximately one year to finalize, ensuring all aspects of the ambitious project are carefully considered and planned.

Suvarnabhumi’s Expansion: 700-Rai Plot Development

Creating State-of-the-Art Maintenance Facilities

The initial phase of the policy involves developing a 700-rai (approximately 280 acres) plot of land south of Suvarnabhumi Airport. This area will be transformed into facilities capable of handling maintenance for small and medium-sized aircraft, significantly expanding the airport’s capabilities.

Aviation Training Centers: Investing in Human Capital

Incorporating Advanced Training Technologies

The new facilities at Suvarnabhumi will not only focus on aircraft maintenance but also include aviation training centers. These centers will feature flight training simulators and specialized programs for aviation engineers and aircraft maintenance technicians, ensuring a skilled workforce to support the growing MRO industry.

Regional Market Aspirations: Capturing 20% Share

Positioning Thailand as a Leading MRO Hub in Southeast Asia

With these strategic investments and expansions, Thailand aims to capture 20 percent of the regional market for commercial maintenance needs. This ambitious goal underscores the country’s commitment to becoming a leading MRO hub in Southeast Asia, attracting business from airlines across the region.
