Thai-US Trade Negotiations Continue Uninterrupted

Prime Minister Reassures Steady Progress

Thailand remains steadfast in its trade discussions with the United States, undeterred by a recent US trade court decision blocking President Donald Trump’s broad import tariffs, according to Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra. Speaking on Thursday, she emphasized that Thailand will not pause its efforts, viewing the US court ruling as an internal matter that does not halt bilateral negotiations.

Asean Summit Highlights Trade Concerns

Regional Leaders Discuss US Tariff Issues

During the 46th Asean Summit in Malaysia, Prime Minister Paetongtarn noted that US import tariffs were a key topic among regional leaders. All Asean nations, including Thailand, have submitted trade proposals to the US and are awaiting a response to schedule formal negotiations. These discussions occurred before the US court’s ruling, ensuring Thailand remains aligned with the agreed 90-day timeline for setting a negotiation date.

Ongoing Communication Strengthens Ties

Thailand and US Maintain Open Dialogue

The prime minister highlighted that informal communication channels between Thailand and the US remain active, with both sides regularly exchanging updates. This consistent and constructive dialogue signals a positive outlook for trade relations. Paetongtarn stressed that there are no signs of a breakdown in communication, reinforcing Thailand’s commitment to advancing economic cooperation.

Vice Minister Optimistic About Future Progress

Thailand Not Seen as Emerging Trade Rival

Russ Jalichandra, Vice Minister for Foreign Affairs, expressed confidence in the ongoing trade talks, noting that the US court ruling’s impact is still unfolding. He clarified that Thailand, despite maintaining a trade surplus with the US, is not viewed as a major trade rival like China or Japan. Jalichandra sees this as an opportunity to strengthen economic ties, emphasizing mutual benefits through continued negotiations.

US Court Ruling Challenges Trump’s Tariffs

Global Trade Plans Face Significant Setback

A US federal court in Manhattan recently blocked President Trump’s sweeping import tariffs, ruling that he exceeded his authority. This decision disrupts Trump’s strategy to use tariffs to force global trade negotiations, citing trade deficits and drug influx as a “national emergency.” The ruling, which bars most of Trump’s announced restrictions, has prompted an immediate appeal from the Trump administration, causing uncertainty in global markets.
