Thailand’s Digital Transformation in Tourism

New Entry Requirement for Foreign Visitors

Starting May 1, 2025, Thailand will require all foreign visitors to complete the Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC) online before entering the country. This mandatory digital card replaces the traditional paper-based TM6 form, which was suspended in April 2024. The TDAC is applicable to travelers entering by air, land, or sea.

Purpose of the Digital Arrival Card

The TDAC aims to streamline immigration procedures, enhance border security, and provide a seamless travel experience. It aligns with Thailand’s broader goal of becoming a “Smart Tourism Destination.”

How the Thailand Digital Arrival Card Works

Registration Process for TDAC

Travelers must register for the TDAC online through the official portal up to three days before their arrival. The process involves submitting personal details, passport information, travel plans, and accommodation addresses. After submission, an acknowledgment email will be sent to confirm registration.

Required Documents at Immigration

Upon arrival, visitors must present their acknowledgment email along with travel documents for verification at immigration counters. This digital system eliminates paperwork and expedites processing times.

Benefits of the Digital Arrival Card

Faster Processing and Improved Security

The TDAC reduces congestion at immigration checkpoints by digitizing entry procedures. It also enhances data accuracy and improves safety measures by tracking tourist movements more efficiently.

Multilingual Support for Tourists

To encourage adoption, the Immigration Bureau has introduced promotional materials in multiple languages such as English, Chinese, Korean, Russian, and Japanese. These resources guide travelers on completing the TDAC process.

Impact on Tourism Policies

Delay in Tourism Tax Implementation

Thailand has postponed its 300-baht tourism fee and Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) system to focus on ensuring the smooth rollout of the TDAC. These initiatives will be revisited once the digital arrival card system is fully operational.

Addressing Declining Tourist Numbers

Thailand’s tourism sector has faced challenges with declining arrivals from key markets like China and Malaysia due to safety concerns and economic factors. The government aims to restore confidence by showcasing improved safety measures and modernized entry systems.

Preparing for Travel to Thailand

Key Information for Travelers

  • Submission Timeline: Complete the TDAC at least three days before arrival.

  • Exemptions: Thai nationals and certain officials are not required to register.

  • Cost: The TDAC is free of charge.

Future Developments

Thailand plans to integrate the TDAC with other systems like health screening and visa extensions. Travelers are advised to keep their digital cards accessible throughout their stay.

By introducing this mandatory digital arrival card, Thailand is taking a significant step toward modernizing its tourism infrastructure while ensuring a hassle-free experience for international visitors.
