Transport Minister’s Proactive Approach

Suriya Jungrungreangkit’s Strategic Plan

Transport Minister Suriya Jungrungreangkit has initiated a comprehensive strategy to manage the anticipated surge in travelers during the upcoming Songkran Festival. The minister estimates that 16.32 million personal vehicles will traverse Bangkok during the festival, with 7.01 million using highways and motorways, and 9.31 million opting for expressways. Additionally, approximately 15.84 million people are expected to utilize public transportation, including buses, trains, boats, and airplanes.

Aviation Sector Preparations

Increased Flights and Reduced Fares

To address the high travel demand from April 11-17, the Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand (CAAT) is collaborating with Suvarnabhumi and Don Mueang airports, along with six major airlines. An additional 124 domestic flights, offering 25,000 more seats, will be available during this period. Moreover, airfares from Bangkok to 11 popular domestic routes have been reduced by 30% for tickets purchased before March 20, ensuring more affordable travel options for festival-goers.

Rail Transport Enhancements

Extra Train Services for Popular Routes

The State Railway of Thailand is preparing to accommodate over 750,000 passengers during the Songkran period. To meet this demand, 26 extra train services will operate on five key routes, connecting Bangkok’s Krung Thep Aphiwat Central Terminal to major destinations such as Chiang Mai, Ubon Ratchathani, Udon Thani, Sila At, and Yala.

Road Travel Facilitation

Toll Waivers and Traffic Management

To ease road travel, toll fees will be waived on several expressways and motorways during the festival period. The Expressway Authority of Thailand will suspend surcharges on specific routes from April 11-17, while the Department of Highways will waive fees on selected motorways. Additionally, Motorway No. 6 and No. 81 will be open to facilitate smoother traffic flow.

Bus Services Expansion

Increased Capacity for Interprovincial Travel

The Department of Land Transport anticipates an average of 120,000 daily passengers using interprovincial bus services. The Transport Company plans to operate 5,000 trips daily, with peak travel expected on April 11. To meet this demand, an additional 1,000 buses will be deployed, significantly increasing the transport capacity.

Safety Measures and Infrastructure

Temporary Construction Suspension

To ensure traveler safety and convenience, the Department of Highways, Department of Rural Roads, and Expressway Authority of Thailand will suspend road construction during the festive period. This measure will be particularly enforced on Highway No. 35 (Rama II Road) from April 10-17, prioritizing the safety and ease of travel for Songkran celebrants.
