Historic Healthcare Expansion
Universal Scheme Includes Transgender Care
On June 29, 2025, Thailand’s Ministry of Public Health announced a groundbreaking 145-million-baht initiative to include gender-affirming hormone therapy in the 30-baht universal healthcare scheme. This move, approved by Public Health Minister Somsak Thepsuthin, marks a significant step toward inclusive healthcare, ensuring transgender and gender-diverse individuals access safe, affordable treatment under the “Treatment Anywhere” program.
Six Key Medications Added
Supporting Gender-Affirming Care
The National Health Security Office (NHSO) has added six hormone-related medications to its procurement list, including leuprorelin injections, 17-beta estradiol tablets, estradiol transdermal patches, testosterone enanthate injections, cyproterone acetate tablets, and spironolactone tablets. These drugs, critical for gender-affirming care, aim to provide comprehensive medical support for transgender individuals across Thailand’s public health system.
Addressing Health Risks
Curbing Unsupervised Hormone Use
Deputy spokesman Jirapong Songwatcharaporn highlighted the dangers of self-medication, noting that unsupervised hormone use has led to severe side effects and fatalities among transgender people. The new policy ensures medical oversight, with doctors reviewing patients’ medical histories, mental readiness, and treatment plans. This approach aims to reduce health risks, addressing a critical gap in transgender healthcare access.
Financial Relief for Communities
Reducing Costs by Thousands
The initiative is expected to save transgender individuals 1,000 to 2,000 baht monthly on hormone therapy costs, easing financial burdens. By integrating these treatments into the universal healthcare scheme, the government aims to make gender-affirming care accessible to all, particularly for low-income groups. This financial support aligns with Thailand’s broader commitment to equitable healthcare, celebrated during the 2025 Bangkok Pride Parade.
Collaborative Implementation
Expert Partnerships Ensure Success
The policy is being rolled out with support from the Health Systems Research Institute, the Royal Thai College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, and the Thailand Professional Association of Transgender Health (ThaiPATH). These collaborations ensure that hormone therapy is administered safely and effectively, with trained professionals guiding patients through the process, enhancing the program’s credibility and reach.
Strengthening Social Inclusion
A Step Toward Equality
This healthcare expansion reflects Thailand’s growing emphasis on LGBTQ+ rights, building on events like the 2025 Bangkok Pride Parade, where a 200-meter rainbow flag symbolized unity. By providing gender-affirming care, the government not only improves health outcomes but also fosters social inclusion, empowering transgender individuals to live authentically. The policy sets a precedent for inclusive healthcare in Southeast Asia.
