Current Weather Advisory Overview

Summer Storm Season in Thailand

Thailand is in the midst of its summer storm season, and the Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) has issued a critical advisory for severe weather expected from May 9 to May 12, 2025. According to the TMD, these storms are part of an ongoing pattern of intense weather that has been affecting the country since late April, driven by regional meteorological shifts. Residents across multiple regions are urged to prepare for potentially hazardous conditions, including thunderstorms and strong winds.

Causes of the Summer Storms

Meteorological Drivers of Severe Weather

The storms are primarily triggered by a moderate high-pressure system originating from China, now extending over Vietnam and the South China Sea. This system is causing southeasterly and southwesterly winds to converge over upper Thailand, where hot to very hot conditions prevail. Additionally, a westerly trough from Myanmar is moving through the northern and northeastern regions, further destabilizing the atmosphere and increasing the likelihood of severe weather events.

Expected Weather Conditions

Regional Forecast and Hazards

The TMD forecasts that summer storms will initially strike the Northeast, bringing thunderstorms, gusty winds, hail, and lightning strikes. These conditions are expected to spread to the Northern and Central regions, affecting provinces such as Nakhon Sawan, Lop Buri, and the Bangkok metropolitan area. In the South, while summer storms are less likely, southwesterly winds strengthening over the Andaman Sea will lead to increased rainfall and isolated heavy showers in provinces like Phetchaburi and Chumphon, raising concerns about potential flooding.

Regional Impacts and Preparedness

Northeast and Upper Thailand

The Northeastern provinces, including areas like Udon Thani and Khon Kaen, are expected to bear the brunt of the initial storm activity. Residents should anticipate sudden downpours, strong winds, and possible hail, which could disrupt daily activities and pose risks to infrastructure. In the Northern and Central regions, similar conditions are forecast, with provinces like Chiang Mai and Ayutthaya preparing for heavy rainfall and lightning risks.

Southern Thailand’s Rainfall Risks

Although spared from the main summer storms, southern Thailand faces its own challenges. The TMD predicts that strengthening southwesterly winds will bring heavy showers to provinces such as Prachuap Khiri Khan and Chumphon. Coastal areas along the Andaman Sea and the Gulf of Thailand may experience waves up to two meters high during thunderstorms, prompting warnings for ships to exercise caution.

Safety Guidelines and Precautions

Protecting Lives and Property

The TMD has outlined several safety measures to mitigate risks during the storms. Residents are advised to stay indoors during severe weather, avoiding open fields, large trees, and unsecured billboards that could become hazardous in high winds. Health precautions are also critical, as the combination of heat and fluctuating weather increases the risk of heatstroke and respiratory issues. Farmers are encouraged to secure crops and livestock, using protective measures like reinforced shelters to prevent damage from wind and hail.

Ongoing Monitoring and Public Updates

Staying Informed with TMD Resources

The TMD is actively tracking the storm systems and will provide regular updates as the situation evolves. The public is encouraged to monitor official TMD channels, including their website and social media platforms, for real-time weather advisories. Staying informed will help residents and businesses make timely decisions to ensure safety and minimize disruptions during this period of severe weather.
