Thailand and Italy are on the brink of formalizing a groundbreaking agreement to strengthen ties in agriculture, focusing on production, trade, and investment. Following a productive meeting between Agriculture and Cooperatives Minister Narumon Pinyosinwat and Italy’s Minister of Agriculture, Francesco Lollobrigida, both nations are set to establish a roadmap for enhanced agricultural cooperation.

 1. New MoU to Pave Way for Thailand-Italy Agricultural Cooperation

Memorandum of Understanding to Enhance Agricultural Collaboration To solidify their agricultural partnership, Thailand and Italy are drafting a new memorandum of understanding (MoU) that will define goals for boosting production, trade, and investment. This agreement aims to support Thailand’s agricultural exports to Italy and encourage Italian investment in Thai agricultural ventures.

Strengthening Bilateral Ties in Agriculture for a Sustainable Future Francesco Lollobrigida expressed Italy’s commitment to support Thailand’s aspirations within the Thailand-European Union Free Trade Agreement (FTA), focusing on sustainable practices and sanitary measures to ensure quality and longevity in trade partnerships.

2. Thailand’s Agricultural Exports to Italy See Promising Growth

Key Agricultural Products Driving Thai Exports to Italy From January to September, Thailand’s exports to Italy reached 11.88 billion baht (US$342 million), marking a 39% increase from last year. Thai exports include popular goods such as pet food, frozen squid, natural and smoked rubber, rice, processed fish, and fresh produce, showing Italy’s growing appetite for Thai agricultural products.

Strengthening Italy’s Agricultural Sector with Thai Expertise The partnership emphasizes mutual benefits: while Italy offers expertise in food standards, Thailand provides Italy with valuable agricultural goods. Both countries plan to explore opportunities for expanding trade and overcoming global agricultural trade challenges.

3. Fashion and Agriculture: Knowledge Exchange on Silk and Design

Thai Silk and Italian Fashion Designers to Collaborate The agreement also presents a unique opportunity for Thailand to collaborate with Italian fashion designers to promote Thai silk on the international stage. Aligning with Thailand’s “soft power” strategy, this exchange could enhance Thai silk’s appeal in high-fashion markets.

4. Thailand’s Growing Role in Global Agriculture

Leading Southeast Asia’s Agricultural Exports and Global Influence Thailand has emerged as Southeast Asia’s largest exporter of agricultural goods and ranks eighth globally, supported by FTAs. With a total export value of $19.8 billion in the first eight months of 2024, Thailand continues to strengthen its position as a global agricultural hub, with exports to FTA partners making up 69% of the total.

Future Prospects for Thai-Italian Agricultural Collaboration The upcoming MoU promises to be a win-win agreement that not only expands agricultural trade but also strengthens cultural ties. With Italy’s support in sanitation and sustainability measures and Thailand’s expertise in high-demand agricultural goods, this partnership holds significant potential for long-term growth and mutual prosperity.
