Ministry Targets Global Standards

Thailand’s Ministry of Transport announced plans on June 21, 2025, to elevate Ranong Port into a regional logistics hub, aligning with efforts to enhance seaport services to international levels. The initiative, discussed during a June 20, 2025, meeting, seeks to position Ranong as a key gateway for trade and investment across the Andaman Sea, strengthening Thailand’s role in global maritime networks.

Boosting Regional Connectivity

Collaboration with Chittagong Port

Deputy Transport Minister Manaporn Charoensri emphasized Ranong’s potential during a joint meeting under a memorandum of understanding with Bangladesh’s Chittagong Port. The partnership aims to streamline maritime routes, reducing transport time and costs for businesses. By fostering connectivity across the Bay of Bengal, the collaboration supports Thailand’s ambition to become a central player in ASEAN and Bimstec trade frameworks.

Impressive Cargo Growth

251% Surge in 2024

Ranong Port handled 324,933 tonnes of cargo in 2024, a 251% increase from the previous year, signaling its growing importance. Manaporn highlighted the port’s role in driving economic stability in southern Thailand, with projections for continued growth. The upgrade plan includes modernizing infrastructure to handle increased traffic, bypassing the congested Strait of Malacca for faster, more efficient trade routes.

Partnership for Innovation

Digital and Coastal Advancements

Port Authority of Thailand (PAT) director-general Kriengkrai Chaisiriwongsuk outlined plans for a commercial shipping route linking Ranong and Chittagong. The collaboration will enhance port management, integrate digital technologies, and boost coastal transport. A permanent committee and annual meetings will ensure ongoing cooperation, fostering innovations in logistics and related industries to benefit both nations’ economies.

Economic and Trade Benefits

Supporting Bimstec and ASEAN

The Ranong-Chittagong partnership targets improved logistics efficiency, particularly for importers and exporters in the Bimstec region, which includes seven nations across South and Southeast Asia. By aligning with ASEAN trade goals, the upgraded port aims to attract investment and reduce reliance on traditional routes. This strategic move is expected to bolster Thailand’s $500 billion economy by enhancing maritime competitiveness.

Long-Term Vision for Stability

Infrastructure for Future Growth

Manaporn instructed the PAT to accelerate Ranong’s development, focusing on sustainable infrastructure to support long-term economic goals. The port’s transformation into a regional hub will create jobs, streamline supply chains, and position Thailand as a logistics leader. With annual coordination and technological upgrades, Ranong Port is poised to drive regional trade, ensuring resilience amid global shipping challenges.

Strengthening Thailand’s Maritime Role

A Hub for Regional Prosperity

The Ranong Port project underscores Thailand’s commitment to modernizing its maritime sector, with ripple effects for tourism, trade, and industry in the south. By leveraging partnerships like Chittagong, Thailand aims to reduce logistics costs by up to 15%, per industry estimates, and enhance connectivity across Asia. This bold initiative sets the stage for Ranong to become a cornerstone of regional economic growth.
