Renewed Tensions at Thai-Cambodian Border

Landmine Incident Injures Three

On August 9, 2025, three Thai soldiers sustained injuries from a landmine explosion during a routine patrol in Si Sa Ket’s Kantharalak district along the Thai-Cambodian border. The incident, occurring around 10 a.m. in the Don Ao-Krissana area, marks the third such event in three weeks, raising concerns about escalating tensions. The soldiers, part of Infantry Company 111, were laying barbed wire to secure the border when the blast occurred, highlighting ongoing challenges in the disputed region.

Details of the Explosion

Severe Injuries Prompt Hospitalization

The patrol, led by Sgt Maj First Class Thana Pana, inadvertently triggered a landmine, resulting in serious injuries. Thana lost his left foot, Pvt Pakpoom Chaisura sustained arm and back wounds, and Pvt Thananchai Kraiwong suffered a concussion and ruptured eardrum. Emergency responders swiftly transported the soldiers to a local hospital for treatment. The Thai military attributes these incidents to recently placed landmines, intensifying scrutiny of border security measures and compliance with international agreements.

Ceasefire Agreement Under Strain

Ottawa Convention Violation Concerns

The explosion comes days after Thailand and Cambodia signed a 13-point ceasefire agreement on August 7, 2025, during a General Border Committee meeting in Kuala Lumpur, aimed at fostering peace. Acting Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai expressed sympathy for the injured soldiers and confirmed that the incident would be reported under the Ottawa Convention, which bans anti-personnel landmines. Thailand alleges Cambodia’s use of new mines violates this treaty, though Cambodia denies these claims, citing historical unexploded ordnance.

Calls for Joint Mine Clearance

Regional Cooperation Faces Challenges

Phumtham emphasized cautious mine clearance operations, noting that over 400 landmines have already been removed in Surin province. The issue will be a key topic at the upcoming Regional Border Committee meeting, where Thailand seeks to establish joint mine clearance efforts. Cambodia’s rejection of mine clearance as a ceasefire condition complicates negotiations, requiring further dialogue to address the ongoing threat. Enhanced security protocols and international reporting aim to prevent further incidents while preserving fragile bilateral relations.
