Launching the One District, One Scholarship Program

During her recent visit to Maha Sarakham in the northeastern region of Isan, Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra announced the government’s new initiatives, including the One District, One Scholarship (Odos) program. This initiative aims to expand educational opportunities for outstanding students from low-income families across Thailand.

  • Coverage and Opportunities: The scholarship program will cover 878 districts nationwide and 50 districts in Bangkok, providing not only local educational opportunities but also options for studying abroad. This effort is designed to reduce educational disparities and empower students to contribute to their communities upon graduation.

Community Development Initiatives

Encouraging Local Participation

In addition to the scholarship program, Prime Minister Paetongtarn emphasized the importance of community development initiatives. She encouraged local residents to identify their community needs and develop plans that align with those requirements.

  • SML Village and Community Development Program: The new SML (small medium and large) village and community development program aims to strengthen self-reliance within communities. This initiative will help residents address their specific challenges and foster sustainable growth.

Financial Support for the Elderly

Upcoming Cash Handouts

During her visit, Prime Minister Paetongtarn also addressed financial support for the elderly, assuring that the next round of 10,000-baht cash handouts would be distributed before the Chinese New Year on January 29.

  • Eligibility and Distribution: Deputy Finance Minister Julapun Amornvivat announced that recipients would be identified next month, with disbursements expected by the end of January. Approximately 3.2 million individuals are initially eligible for this one-time payment.

Water Management Policies

Addressing Drought and Flood Issues

While inspecting the Huai Nam Khem floodgate in Kosum Phisai district, Prime Minister Paetongtarn outlined policies aimed at improving water management in the Chi River Basin.

  • Comprehensive Solutions: The government’s approach includes strategies to mitigate drought and flood problems, reflecting a commitment to sustainable resource management in agriculture and local communities.

Cultural Engagement and Community Support

Celebrating Local Traditions

As part of her visit, Prime Minister Paetongtarn participated in cultural events, including presiding over the Wapi long-drum ceremony, which marks the 142nd year of this local tradition in Wapi Pathum district.

  • Community Interaction: Her engagement with local traditions highlights the government’s dedication to preserving cultural heritage while supporting community development initiatives.

Commitment to Isan’s Development

Prime Minister Paetongtarn’s visit to Maha Sarakham underscores her government’s commitment to enhancing educational opportunities, supporting community development, and addressing pressing social issues such as financial assistance for the elderly. By implementing these new policies, the government aims to foster sustainable growth and improve the quality of life for residents in Isan and beyond.
