Dutch Association Leads Campaign

The Dutch Association in Thailand is mobilizing to block the proposed sale of the Dutch Embassy compound at 206 Wireless Road, Bangkok, a distinctive property known for its unique architecture. The group aims to preserve the historic site from being sold to local developers.

Cost-Cutting Drives Sale Proposal

Dutch Government Faces Budget Cuts

Willem Pentermann, chairman of the Dutch Association, learned of the sale plan through a Dutch newspaper, revealing negotiations to offload the embassy due to a government-wide cost-saving initiative. The Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs, facing budget reductions, is exploring the sale as a financial measure.

Calls for Transparency Intensify

Letters Sent to Dutch Officials

Pentermann emphasized the need for transparency, noting the association’s efforts to influence Dutch Foreign Minister Caspar Veldkamp through letters urging reconsideration. Copies were sent to Dutch party leaders, the Treasury Department, and even King Willem-Alexander, seeking broader support to halt the sale.

Financial Details Sought

Cost of New Diplomatic Office Questioned

The association has formally requested a financial breakdown of the transaction, including costs for a new embassy and ambassador’s residence. Discussions with the Dutch Ministry’s Real Estate Department aim to clarify the deal, estimated to be worth €450-500 million.

Heritage Concerns Raised

Fear of Demolition Clause

Pentermann warned against repeating the British embassy’s sale, which allowed historic structures to be demolished. The association fears a contract clause mandating demolition of the embassy’s heritage building before transfer to developers, threatening its cultural and architectural value.

Emotional and Historical Ties

Community Rallies for Preservation

Monique Kleinnibbelink, a Dutch resident, highlighted the emotional significance of the embassy, recalling community events like King’s Day celebrations. With Thai-Dutch relations spanning over 420 years, the compound holds deep historical importance, fueling efforts to protect it from sale.
