A woman who was filmed vaping while on a plane will be charged, according to Chiang Rai airport authorities.

The authorities at Mae Fah Luang Airport say the passenger has been identified after video footage of her smoking an e-cigarette was shared on social media.

The footage of the woman vaping on a flight taking off from Chiang Rai on Sunday, April 7, was posted on the popular Red Skull X account. The account has nearly 620,000 followers, according to a Bangkok Post report.

The person who shared the footage questioned how the passenger was able to bring the vape onto the aircraft.

“This is shameful. I don’t know how she was able to go through the airport security checkpoint.”

Airport bosses have responded by saying the woman faces charges under both the Tobacco Products Control Act and the Act on Certain Offences Against Air Navigation.

It’s understood the airline involved has been ordered to contact the passenger and advise her of the legal proceedings against her.

The director general of Chiang Rai’s Mae Fah Luang Airport says while security checks are thorough, a vape can be missed as the mouthpieces are made from plastic, which isn’t detectable by X-ray.

Somchanok Tiamtiab-Rat adds that vaping components such as e-liquids and disposable vapes are banned on all flights in Thailand and if found, will be confiscated by airport security officers.
